Desert Golf Shootout Raises Almost $34,000!
The final tally is in, and the recent Jim Shockey SCI Desert Golf Shootout raised nearly $34,000 for good causes, including Jim's own fund to take military veterans on all-expenses-paid hunts that they could not otherwise enjoy.
The tournament, held January 31 at Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona, was sponsored by SCI, Leupold, Loew's Ventana Canyon Resort & Spa, TN Marketing, National Rifle Association, GSM/Stealth Cam, and SHE Safari. It included a Friday evening meet & greet, live auction, silent auction and raffle items. All golfers received a free Leupold GX-1 golf laser rangefinder, a $299 value. And on Saturday, SHE Safari sponsored a Wine & Cheese with Louise Shockey function, for non-golfers.
The first military veteran to directly benefit from the proceeds of this event and others recently conducted by Jim will be Peter Johns (PJ) of San Antonio, Texas.
PJ has been in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. He is a chief petty officer and nuclear electrician working on nuclear reactors on submarines and aircraft carriers. PJ was twice deployed for duty in the Persian Gulf. PJ was injured while aboard the USS Nimitz on November 16, 2006. The electrical panel that powers the ship exploded in front of PJ and three others. PJ had third-degree burns over 35 percent of his body and lost his left index finger. His corneas were also scarred, which causes slightly blurred vision. For approximately 75 days, PJ was in a coma.
PJ is a dedicated, avid hunter, who particularly enjoys bowhunting. A talented golfer, PJ joined Jim's foursome in the Desert Golf Shootout and will travel to Saskatchewan over Thanksgiving 2009 to hunt whitetails. Jim's fund will pay for the hunt and all of PJ's licenses and tags. The Arizona chapter of SCI generously offered to pay for PJ's roundtrip airfare for the hunt.
PJ will be the first of many military veterans who will enjoy these hunting adventures as a result of the support of the hunting industry and hunters around the country.
