Misjudged Monster Hangay

Posted by: jsadmin

We got up at 3:30 to go hit the same area that we hit the first and the second day and the guys are still looking for the monster ram that they supposedly saw the second day, but still nothing as far as I can tell. We went all day long, trekked the same spots, saw two bull elk and that was it.

In the afternoon we were kind of depressed and sitting on the top of the mountain glassing and all of a sudden they saw a ram running from one mountain range to another. It wasn't us that spooked it, must have been wolves or something, but it ran across the mountain range into the mountain range right in front of us and bedded down about a mile ahead of us across the big, open valley. My guide checked through the spotting scope at 60 power and he said it was 47 inches, for sure, which is a good one. We made a three mile stalk to get around the tops of the mountain behind it and come down on it with the wind and everything. We made a perfect stalk, came over and it wasn't right where we thought, it had moved uphill in the little drainage. I was looking down and then Matty spotted it over to our right, where it was already running. At one point it stopped and I asked how far it was and nobody would give me an answer so I judged it at 250 and I shot, dropped it in its tracks and everyone was all excited. Then it got up and started running downhill, it was obviously hit hard, but I reloaded and shot it again and this time it was perfect and I dropped it. So it was all very exciting, until we went up and it was actually much, much smaller than what we thought and the distance was actually only 150 yards, not 250, because the ram had a much smaller body. But we did our best and those kind of things happen. I wanted a monster, but it just happens and you can't always get the biggest one in the world, but I got my Hangay argali and everyone is happy and thrilled. It has a beautiful coat on it and tomorrow we're going to go out hunting for Gazelle.
