Jim Lands First "Ghana Slam" in History

Posted by: jsadmin

We went out last night with a new guide who's a little, tiny fellow that was a local poacher-guy that we've now converted onto the legal side of hunting. He's a great little hunter, sneaking around in all the old-growth stuff that's old jungle and has been selectively logged way back when. It's still not cultivated land but was a little bit more open underneath which was really nice walking. We went through one little patch of thicker stuff and we hit a tree ant nest of some kind, so the little guide knocked it first, then I came behind him and hit it again which made them even more angry and then Matty hit it and they were even more angry and then by the time the last fellow came through, who is the guide from South Africa that comes along every night carrying water, he got hammered. He had hundreds of ants biting, stinging, poisoning his body. I'm sure we all have some sort of toxic poisoning if we did a test on our blood. So we were all jumping around yanking these ants that had locked their heads into our skin. It was kind of fun in the dark trying to get them off. We were still picking them off all night long as we found them.

Then we were going along and we spotted a maxwells duiker. I just saw its back at first because it was behind a great, big tree. The little guide got around with a light and spotted it and I wasn't sure what it was but he just said, "shoot, shoot, shoot" so finally I realized it was a maxwells and it was wide open, so I shot it perfect and dropped it where it stood. It's huge, with the biggest body they've gotten for a maxwells so far. Not the biggest horns, but it was a great, cool thing. So now I have the Ghana Slam, which is the first time anyone's ever got all three duikers. It's the black and the royal antelope and the maxwells duiker.

Larry Rudolph went out last night and got his second royal antelope with a different guide that he went with and he's still looking for his black duiker and his maxwells duiker. So we all had a great day yesterday and this morning we got up and none of our pushers or guides felt like working today, so that was the end of our morning. Now this afternoon we're about to head out to the lake and do a bit of bird hunting and we're going to roast the brush-tailed porcupine that we shot yesterday. We're going to take tonight off so we can start early tomorrow to try and get the big cain rats.

Other than that, everything's good. It's still boiling hot here, with lots of birds everywhere and we saw a giant spider last night as we were walking through the forest. Lots of lizards everywhere too - I am in heaven.
