Barbecued Feast of Ghana's Finest Foods
Yesterday after I blogged, we went to a big lake where they had lots of wild looking birds. We took the porcupine and barbecued it on the shore along with some of the royal antelope meat. Then we got a couple tilapia fish from some of the local fishermen and we barbecued those up as well. When it was dark, we discovered the lake was full of frogs, huge ones everywhere. So we went frog hunting for a little while and cooked those up as well - they were absolutely delicious. We were eating like kings.
Then this morning we went out doing drives all day long and walked miles and miles and miles. We saw flashes and glimpses of black duiker and royal antelope and I actually got a shot at the cain rat, but of course missed because now I can't just shoot when they come running through the brush becuse I'm being selective and trying to just get the animals that I'm still looking for which are the cain rat, the giant pouched rat and the panther genet, the latter which we'll only be able to get at night anyways. So I have to be so selective and when they're coming so fast, I don't have time to judge what I'm actually shooting at. I know it's an animal on license, but at this point I don't want to shoot any more of the other ones that I've already taken, so that's my excuse, but basically I missed. Then we walked by one of the black guys who's pushing and he has a shotgun so he smoked the cain rat that I missed. They're really cool animals; they're like big, giant, rodent, hamster, guinea pigs but maybe 25 pounds with a shortish tail like a hamster.
This afternoon they also found another den with a giant pouched rat, so they smoked it out again but it didn't come out of the hole that I was waiting at this time, instead it came out of the hole that one of the other pushers was at. He actually grabbed it with his bare hands - I can't believe that he didn't get chewed up to bits. They're huge rats, weighing at least 5 pounds and this one was 36 inches long from nose to tip of the tail and looked just like a normal, big, giant rat.
That was it for today, it was just a long day with lots of walking. Now we're just getting ready to head out to go after panther genets all evening. We'll try tonight but it's getting tougher and tougher.
