Fantastic Daylight Hunt for Black Duiker

Posted by: jsadmin

We got a black duiker today, which is the first one taken since the 90's and that was actually taken in Liberia. This was in bright daylight, a fantastic hunt and the first black duiker that they've gotten here in Ghana. It was a really, really hard shot, running through the trees at me and I had about 10-foot visibility, so we're so really excited today. It's amazing to get a black duiker. It was only on the second drive this morning and we think we got him on camera too. Matty actually heard him first and got the camera on him and I got a glimpse and a flash and got him.

The Next Day…

It was a slow day today. The guides came with four dogs in the morning but two of them took off right off the bat, so we only had two pushers with two dogs so it was a pretty weak day. We did some bird hunting for the unusual types of birds that they have here but not much happened for us.  We had a long day, but now it's time to go for a night hunt. It's just fantastic walking through the jungle. We did it last night for Palm Civet and Panther Genet and I missed a palm civet because it's hard to see at night and the flashlights they use are very weak and dim. Anyways, that's my excuse, but I missed.

We found two tortoises in the middle of the night and we found a  Pouched rat living in its den. We saw where a brush-tailed porcupine had been eating palm nuts and some kind of a big, giant fruit, but just no luck for us. The guy in the lead, who they call Jaboa, saw two maxwell duikers, but I didn't see them through the thick brush, so no chance for a shot. My arms are scratched right up, I went with a muscle shirt into the jungle yesterday and I just got clawed right up, so now everything is ripped and cut. We're going back out tonight with John, our original nighttime guide. They're basically triple-teaming us to keep us going virtually 20 hours a day, but it's gorgeous and hot with big rain storms, lightening and showers today so hopefully tonight will be a good night for royal antelope.
