Vacation Ends, TV Show Filming Work Begins
Todd and I had a good time the last few days vacationing in New Mexico and seeing the sites and exploring some beautiful lands as we were hunting for ibex during our just-for-fun trip together. Great experience and a great warm-up for getting down to the real business of going after oryx as we're now back on the clock and filming for television. Yesterday we drove from Deming, New Mexico all the way to Almagordo, where we'll be hunting the oryx.
We got here and met up with our outfitter Kerry Sebring and his assistant guide Eldon. Went out and it was really, really windy. I took a shot with my .300 Win. Mag. Thompson/Center. It was like 30 mile per hour winds, but it seemed to hit pretty good, so I didn't do anything. Then we went out and right off the bat spotted two different groups of oryx. There were 12 in one group and eight in another. Lots of real big ones, definitely some shooters in there, and we waited right until the sunset, not quite, they kept feeding toward us.
The one spotted us at about 150 yards, but the biggest one was about 200. And I lined up with a great big gravel bank as a rest, so I couldn't have gotten a better rest in the world. Held perfectly on the shoulder, and I went to squeeze the trigger, and I don't know what I did, and I totally missed the oryx. That was the end of the hunting yesterday evening. This morning went out early, didn't see anything at all. Yesterday Kerry saw two or three groups in the morning. Then I took a shot with my gun; it was shooting about 3 1/2 inches low at 100 yards. Two shots touching, so I raised it up, so now it's set. No idea what happened on the miss. It happens, that's what happens when you hunt. The only way not to miss is not to hunt. Now we're waiting to head out for the afternoon hunt. I'll keep you posted!
