Party's Over, Winter Strikes
Winter wonderland this morning, snow everywhere; the rut seems to be over. I've been calling all day, saw one bull maybe a 50-incher halfway up the mountainside, he listened but then just kept going to wherever he was headed; I think we're pretty well done. Black wolf this morning right on the shoreline tried to get a crack at it, but he was gone before we could get close enough. Whitehorse has 3 inches of snow, roads are terrible. Two Otter aircraft are grounded in Whitehorse because of the weather. Out here winter is literally right here, so I had to get both ARGOs back across the lake, I got one across last night, but it was too wavey to bring the second one. First thing this mroning when it was calm I had to bring it back. Time ... the Yukon is a tough task-master and it's telling us it's time to get out of here. I have two bowhunters who have their last day tomorrow, they're hurting as well as far as sightings, the moose have just backed off. Struggling away with these last three hunters ... my recommendation to my hunters will be to get out of here or we could be stuck here for two weeks.
The Next Day ...
Looks like my moose season is over and I did not get a moose for my last hunter Lary Knowlton, tried everything we hunted all day today again and nothing, it's just shut right down, ugly weather. We have the Otter scheduled to come in first thing tomorrow morning to get us. We'll be working all night shutting down the camp. We just want to get out if we can, if the weather permits. Then that will be that. The season ended on a downer note. Best season ever otherwise, biggest moose average and most caribou ever. No explaining it ... So we're out of here hopefully tomorrow.
