Winter Takes Aim at Moose Territory

Posted by: jsadmin

Tough, tough day today. Winter is coming closer and closer north of us and south of us is horrible weather snow, winter wonderland. But right here we're in some kind of opening that it's just cold, cold wind and we saw one tiny little bull moose today and that was it. Wolves howling all around the lake, so it was not a good day. Whatever moose were here have shut right down because of the wolves; that's usually what happens for a few days, so tomorrow morning we'll give it a shot and then we're closing this spike camp down and getting back to the main camp because if we're going to get caught, I don't want to get caught way out here by horrible winter weather. Hopefully it's not too late for tomorrow even. The tops of the mountains around us right now are shrouded in snow and clouds, so I'm hoping we still ahve another day to get back to main camp and then we'll have to hunt out of there keep our fingers crossed and otherwise there are only two more guys left out in the camps that need to get a bull. One of our bowhunters yesterday got a 62-inch beautiful bull so there's only myself guiding Corey Knowlton's dad, Larry, and then there are two other hunters and that's it and then we're done for the year. It's been an amazing year. We have our fingers crossed we can close it with a strong hunt.

Living Like Kings in Cabela's Tent ... A Day Earlier

Pitch dark out and we're living like kings out here in our spike camp. We have the Cabela's tent set up. They're the most fantastic tents ... 15 minutes now to set it up. They're as big as a wall tent, put a little wood stove in here, and we have four guys sleeping in it and it's just the best thing since chopped liver. Instead of living like bush pigs, we're living like kings. Today we got up early, got all our gear on the Argos to spike out and went about 6 hours on the Argos cross-country to a tiny little lake I knew about and got down to the lake got one of our boats on it. Little island that we stay at and were coming back; Nathan stayed with Todd setting up the camp and I went back with Larry Knowlton and we got the second load. We were loading and a great big bull moose showed up on the shoreline about 200 yards from us. We hurried back to the island, grabbed Nathan and Todd, came all the way back, got there just as he was crossing a river. Nathan made a perfect shot ...  beautiful 58-inch bull, 12 by 11 on the points, just beautiful. That was at about 4:30 p.m. Got him all quartered up and back to camp, finished setting up and now we're just about to sit down and have dinner. Clouding over and it sure feels like there's snow just around the corner. Been an amazing season. Todd Bissenden has broken all of the records, he has nine moose kills on camera, three caribou kills and one wolf kill. Things are going great. But it feels like winter is coming right at us ...

Twin Otter Stops on a Dime ... A Day Earlier

Today got up at 6:30 a.m. the airplane was coming by 8 to pick up the guys and hunters and leaving Todd and I and Larry Knowlton and Nathan with us, the airplane came in and Todd and I went up to the airstrip, the Twin Otter was coming, so we had to make sure the airstrip was clear, so we spent all morning pulling out these saplings with the winch of the Argo and we cleared this big long stretch of landing strip. Then the Twin Otter came in and landed in about 100 yards, they hardly needed anything ... what a machine, it was amazing. We got some incredible video of it taking off over the top of the camera, and I had blisters all over my hands from pulling out all these saplings, wasted our time because we didn't need it for the Twin Otter. Had to wait 6 hours and this evening went out and called and didn't see a thing. Tomorrow we'll get serious and go spike out. Weather stil good here amazing as it seems calling for inclement weather coming so I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get these two moose and get out of Dodge before winter.
