Never Leave Home without an ARGO

Posted by: jsadmin

Two days earlier from the Yukon... We traveled all the way back from spike camp, shut it down for the year; everything is put back in barrels out there so the grizzly bears can’t eat it. We even cut up some firewood for next year so it’s all ready to go. Great trip back in, we spotted lots of caribou but no moose yet for Tim Schnell, owner of Stealth Cam and Walker’s Game Ear. We got into camp late in the evening and then got up early the next morning.

The next day... Today we headed out the other direction from our main camp, haven’t hunted that way this year yet. Took all of our spike camp out with us because I thought we would be living like bush pigs for the next three days. The weather was fantastic again, 15 days of beautiful weather in a row here in the Yukon.

We traveled out 10 miles, parked the ARGOs, climbed up the mountains and looked down. There were five cows and a great big, giant Bull Moose in a beaver pond down in the nasty willows. We were so high above them so we slid on our rear ends all the way down the slope to get within 213 yards. Tim made a perfect shot, got the giant moose and it actually fell right into the water of the beaver pond. While we were sitting there, a calf moose went running by right below us, and then a great big grizzly bear chasing after it, trying to kill it. I yelled and yelled and screamed and finally the bear turned and ran back into the thick willows. We didn’t get it on camera because Todd was still up above me and didn’t see it happening. So we got down to the moose, managed to get the actual ARGOs right up next to it. I took the ARGOs through places that I never imagined they would be able to get through, busting down giant willows, over rocks, these things are invincible. We used both ARGOs with both winches to pull the giant moose out of the water back onto dry land. We skinned it as quick as we could because we knew the grizzly was hanging around. We had the gun loaded the whole time just incase, got it all loaded up and took off just before dark to get out of there.

Unfortunately I left all my knives and my sharpener at the kill sight but there is no way to go back there because we know the grizzly will be all over it by now. We got in at about midnight, our ARGOs performed all day magnificently. It was a great bull, long pans, points everywhere and great shooting by Tim.

The Next Day... Today we’re doing great, another beautiful day, blue skies and looking for a mountain caribou. Tim Schnell is happy, Todd Bissenden is our cameraman and the other guide, Johnny Johnston is doing great as well. The moose are falling in the other camps as well. They got another good one in one of our camps yesterday. We have three camps that are still out there looking for bulls, but otherwise all the other hunters are done. So our first group of hunters is almost at 100% success, it’s looking good up here.
