Mongolia Hunt Filled with Unexpected Challenges
Standing out in the middle of Outer Mongolia the Gobi Desert. Traveled all day today. In fact, we traveled for about 17 hours. We left this morning at 8, and it's now 1 in the morning. There are no roads, literally just tracks across the desert for the last 15 hours. Some are good tracks, and for about the last two hours there was no track at all ... (Editor's note: Satellite reception lost ...)
The Next Day ...
I'm not sure how far I got, but yesterday we went hunting, we saw tons of Gobi Argali rams in the morning. All together all day we saw about 40 rams. We saw ... apparently they say a good one is 40 inches and a great one is over 45, and we probably saw three rams that were in that 40-45 range. The big one they had seen, of course, wasn't there when we showed up.
Interesting style of hunting. They get up high in the morning and they glass as the sheep are moving then they actually send a guy on a little dirt bike all over in the mountains all around there to move them becaue they get in little nooks and crannies for the hot days and that makes them move. Then we can spot them and sneak on them. In the evening all we did was walk for several miles in the desert we saw wolves howling, so I howled and brought the wolf right in to about 150 yards, but the gun that I'm using ... because my gun still wasn't here yesterday ... it was just too short for me and I couldn't get in good position and didn't shoot.
When you are this far from home in a foreign land, hunting methods often are not what you expect or are used to. Whatever they are doing here, I still won't compromise what I believe in. I'm going to hunt my way and if they don't like me that's fine. I'm going to be proud of the animal when I get it even if it's not as big as I could have gotten hunting different methods ...
The Next Day ...
We got our ram this evening. My discussion with my guide yesterday worked out well. My head guide hates answering questions. I don't know why. I love asking questions, so we made a deal that I don't ask and he doesn't answer and he makes all of the decisions and it worked!
We found a ram this morning. Worked all the way around miles and got in a position above them, waited, waited, waited, but they didn't come out this evening. So we started walking toward where we figured they bedded up and, sure enough, he called it at 43 inches ... anything over 40 is good and over 45 is really good and the guide asked me if I wanted to shoot. I said, "You're the guide." He said, "OK, let's leave it." And then I said, "Well, understand, I'll be happy with any ram." And then he said, "OK, let's go hunt it."
So we made a stalk and got 200 yards ... really difficult shot ... it spooked and was running 234 yards running downhill and I hit it a touch far back, got a second crack at it, but hit rocks 10 feet in front of my barrel as it was running out of sight and then we tracked it and I managed to get one more bullet in and that was that. It's magnificent. It is 46 on one side by 44 1/2; a giant with 8 1/2-inch bases. I am thrilled. Now we're on to the next stage of our Mongolia adventure ... Stay tuned!
