Eva in Serious Accident, Jim Headed Home

Posted by: jsadmin

Editor's note: Jim is headed home from Mongolia after completing the final stage of his hunt with a black-tailed gazelle and hearing that Eva was involved in a serious ATV accident while reindeer hunting in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. Eva was a passenger on the Polaris Ranger ATV, driven by a guide and carrying one other passenger. The ATV lost traction while headed up a slope, slid backward and rolled a long distance. Initial reports indicate that the guide may have suffered broken ribs. Eva is sore with bad bumps and bruises, and the other passenger suffered similar injuries with a more serious blow to the head. A flight has been chartered to transport the team back to the Alaskan mainland for further medical evaluation.

Two days earlier from Mongolia ... Stepped outside of our ger in the Siberian ibex camp, Altay ibex camp, it's beautiful; the canyon, gorgeous rocks and mountains around us. Matt and I are sitting here drinking beer that we had left in the creek for the last hour. We drove all day today from the city of Hove, about a seven-hour drive. Last night we actually got a shower in the town of Hove, first one in 10 days, and then drove all day today again to get to here. So we're really excited. We're hoping this one goes better than our Altay Argali hunt; apparently there are quite a few around we'll see. It also sounds like we're going to be able to hunt black-tailed gazelle if we can find them. They're around somewhere, but we're going to first try to get the ibex and then go after the gazelle. We're back feeling good again after our eight-day attempt at the Argali failed. Looking forward to it.

The Next Day ... Great day today. We four-wheeled up into the mountains, met the horses. Took horses right from there to the top of the mountain and right off the bat spotted four ibex, two good ones and two small ones. They were about 400 yards away. We made a stalk, we spooked them, they took off, we followed them down the mountain ... rugged, rugged, dry, big giant rocks and slate. We got up on them again 200 yards and this time Matt blew it, he stuck his head way up high, the cameraman Matt Gibson, just one of those things he got his head up too high, and they spotted him took off so we went after them again. Couldn't find them for most of the day, and then toward about 4 o'clock we finally spotted them way across on another mountain. We got over there, the two big ones were together 200 yards. I don't know, I think my gun might have gotten banged around on the horses or something because it shot high, right at the base of the neck and I was aiming for the lungs. So sometimes you gotta have luck and this was luck. It's a big one too 41x38 inches long ...

Editor's note ... Lost satellite phone reception. Jim took his black-tailed gazelle the next day and is headed home. From home he heads to the Yukon for moose season within the week ...
