Mongolia Hunt Turns to Disaster

Posted by: jsadmin

Disaster on the mountain today. We went up, it was beautiful not a cloud in the sky; we were glassing one spot, two guides went the other direction to another area a half mile away, and then our main guide who I like a lot, hard worker, he went with another of the local nomads in another direction, they took horses about a mile away down the ridgeline. Apparently he was riding his horse downhill, and the saddle gave out and he slid off the horse, his foot got caught in the stirrup and his horse took off racing toward the cliff dragged him about 30 yards across the rocks and then with about two yards before going over the edge of the cliff he got his foot untangled and it looks like he has busted ribs. There are no internal injuries. We got him off the mountain, but two guides had to walk him down all the way down holding him up one on each arm because he was so busted up. We took the horses back all the way around and met up with him, got him to the hospital in the nearest village and they checked him all out and that's what it is ... really serious bruising and broken ribs. So he's out of the loop now. So that was the end of our day, the first perfect day we've had to hunt here was a disaster couldn't hunt. That happened right off the bat, now the weather is starting to roll in again and it doesn't look good for tomorrow and just unfortunate that it happens. You always walk a horse downhill, that's the lesson of the day. So we're having a tough one now. It doesn't look good, so now we've got all the guides who don't speak English. They only have one decent pair of binoculars between them, and they have one spotting scope. So it's not looking good. I'm trying to stay positive about this, but we'll see. After today that kind of knocks the stuffing out of you when you wait three days for good weather and when it shows up you don't hunt. The good news is that nobody got hurt really badly; he's alive and he sure coud have been a lot worse off than he is.

The Next Day ...

Slow day today. Went out his morning it was raining, waited for about two hours and then we didn't go up in the mountains, we actually headed out in the low country, I'm not sure why. Our main guide was laid up so he wasn't with us, we ended up driving around all day, long slow day. Weather got really good by about 8:30 in the morning and then instead of going in the mountains we headed to the low country. I don't know what's going on because I don't understand the language. We had a long slow day. Didn't see any rams. Now it looks like it's clearing off, so maybe tomorrow we'll go up in the mountains where the sheep are.

The Next Day ...

Long day. Got up at 4, got on the horses, got up on top today finally, first full day of actual hunting in six days. Hunted all day up on top, good weather, we spotted two small rams in the afternoon and then two small rams as we were coming down the mountain. Just got down now in the dark and planning to hopefully have good weather tomorrow and try again. But like I said, first full day of hunting, so it was a good day in terms of that ... saw a wolf as well ...
