Mare's Milk Starts Good Day in Mongolia

Posted by: jsadmin

Two days ago in the morning we got up at 5, we had our fermented mare's milk that we bought the day before. The guys bought two big jugs of it and a little Coke-sized bottle one for me. So you wait for morning, so it's had a chance to ferment all night. So we made it to a camp, we slept there, got up and had the mare's milk. You open it up and it's like gooey, fermented horse milk. We drank it down, it tasted like yogurt and vinegar mixed together.

We drove most of the day and in the afternoon we finally started getting close to the area where we thought the gazelle would be and we picked up a local nomad who knew where there were some gazelles. We went over and found a herd of about 200 with four males, one was a good one. We did a long, long stalk. Took us about an hour to stalk close enough because they are so spooky. We finally we got 360 yards. T/C .300. Win. Mag with the wind, adjusted, perfect shot right through the top of the heart! So we got our Mongolian gazelle. It's definitely one of the spookiest animals I ever hunted. We were lucky; they were up in more hilly country than the first time we hunted them.

Then we continued on; we had a fan belt break, but they walked back to a town, I guess these Russian Jeeps, every town around here has parts for them, so got it fixed and made it back into town last night and actually felt like humans again. We had a real bed and a real hotel, the Ulu Bantaar Hotel. So today I'll catch up on e-mails and tomorrow we'll fly to the high Altay Argali camp which is on the other end of Mongolia where we start the second phase of this jounrey. So we're doing good. We got our three animals from the Gobi Desert we were hoping to get and we're all excited about that. The guide and myself are getting along great now, we understand each other. I'm not lazy, if there's a chance to hunt and work, we're going to work, and he understands that now.
