Third Trip's the Charm in Peru

Posted by: jsadmin

First of all, congratulations to Brock Lesnar; I got the message out here that he won his fight. We tried everything. We went everywhere in the one city in northern Peru, trying to find a sports bar or something that had a satellite so we could watch the fight, but we missed it. We got the message that he won as soon as the fight was over. Just wish I could have been there. I was supposed to be there; Brock had invited me and my son, Bran, to watch it. Last year we did watch him fight. This year I couldn't make it because we're in Peru, but congratulations to Brock. He's a really cool guy and the toughest guy on the planet right now.

We drove yesterday all day again. We had to sight the gun in; there was no place to sight the gun in, the one gun range had been turned in to like a shanty town. So we had to go to another city and I got the police to let me sight my gun in. Then we had to meet with the top brass for this ranch ... made it out here after dark, so then this morning first thing we got up and drove about 10 kilometers on the ranch.

It's really cool; it's foggy; it's up high, but not as high as where we were hunting last time, much smoother nicer country. It reminds me, identical to Old Mexico and Coues' deer. Except these are even smaller than Coues' deer. They had about 20 mounted deer on the walls around the lodge here, and I put a measure on all of them. The biggest was 84 SCI points, second biggest was 81, and they all seem to average right around that 50 to 60 inches. Basically every 3 by 3 that you see, that's what they're hunting.

We went out this morning saw a 3 by 3 right off the bat, but that didn't look big enough to me then we saw a spiker then we saw a fork-horn, then we had a beautiful 4 by 3 come walking down the trail we were sitting waiting, and we got fantastic footage and I made an off-hand shot at about 40 yards. We got him! So finally, after three trips to South America, I got my South American white-tailed deer, and it is beautiful. Scored about 61 inches SCI. So a little smaller than a medium Coues' deer, but I'm thrilled.

Now we're hunting a second one, a bigger one hopefully. We went out this evening and saw probably 8 different bucks. We saw one that was bigger, but only a 3 by 3. Tomorrow we're taking mules and heading way out in the mountains to a place they call the Windy Mountain, a place that nobody ever hunts. Try to find something bigger.

Gabriel Cruz is the outfitter, Safaris Endinos. So we had a great hunt today. It's been six days just trying to gt to the first day of hunting. But it was worth it!
