Muntjac and Chinese Water Deer

Posted by: jsadmin

We moved today to a new area to look for Chinese water deer. We are near the town of Buckinghamshire in about a 250-year-old pub. Beautiful rooms, fantastic ... went to the estate where we'll be hunting. It's high-fenced, but we won't be hunting in the high-fenced area, we went through it and you could see all sorts of deer and red stag monsters, it was really interesting. We also went into their area where they keep the trophies. There were a couple of real well-known hunters here recently and they got some of the animals out of that high-fenced area. We went touring tonight, and Matt went out tonight with Mike McCrave and James the stalker to look for Chinese water deer and they saw one, a young male. So it's not looking real good, I'm a little worried, but we'll see. Too early to get too excited about it. Tomorrow we'll get up early to go stalking the season actually opens tomorrow. We have three days, so we have our fingers crossed.

The Day Before ...

Fantastic day today, went out with Chris Rogers, our stalker. He really knows his stuff, it's such a pleasure to hunt with guys who know their territory, know their stuff. He spotted a muntjac male bedded down way back in the timber; we sneaked up to within 80 yards, waited for 20 minutes on sticks, finally it stood up, made the shot, it was quartering to us a little bit, I thought it would drop right there, I was about one inch to the right didn't drop, we found blood. As we were going to get the dogs to trail it, we found it, not even 60 yards from where we were looking. Great muntjac, magnificent beautiful deer. Then Chris took us to the local village here and we met the duke and dutchess of Euston, along with a Lord by the name of Harry. He invited us to stay with him on stand while they did a driven pheasant hunt with nine other noble people from here. It was really different, steeped in tradition, the game cart was a wagon from 1810 that they put all the birds in and his gun was a 50-year-old side-by-side. Great day, I have the world record of fish and chips, five meals in a row. Also let all of Matt Gibson's family, friends and fans know that Matt's doing a heck of a job!
