Caribou Down, Bull Moose Raking
We got a caribou yesterday and got it all in to camp today, and it will be picked up by airplane tomorrow. It's going to score around 360; it's really nice, old, the teeth were all worn down. We had a heck of a hike to get him out of there. Three of us all with full backpacks.
Saw a few cow moose today, and then right this evening at the end of the lake saw a big bull moose, so tomorrow we might go after him or we might go out to the spike camp and set that up and see what's out there. But otherwise everything is good; rained us today, cold; the moose are starting to rake. This one at the end of the lake was raking like crazy. I'm sure I could have called him in, but it was right at dusk and I didn't want to take a chance of spooking him.
Serious part of the season is coming up quick where the moose will start rutting ...
The Next Day ...
We went today 6 1/2 hours on the ARGO to our spike camp. Had three barrels of gear that I had left here from last season, so we're all set up. Got here about 6 tonight and took about four hours to set up camp. I can see five moose across from our little camp; there are going to be some big bulls here. I'm really excited about what we're going to see. We had a caribou just run through our camp about 80 yards from us.
The grizzly bears have pushed over the barrels and stepped all over our water pail and wrecked that, but otherwise we got it up and running and we're all comfy in here. I forgot to bring a foamie, so I'm on the rocks on the ground. The other guys have cots, so they're OK, but it's going to be a little rough for me sleeping here. Warm day, but cold, cold, cold tonight.
We're excited!
The ARGO's work great. We had to go across the river. I was kind of concerned about the river crossing, but we attached a rope to the rear of my ARGO and on to the other front end of the other ARGO. I went out into the river, and as my ARGO floated me downstream they just kept a little pressure on to keep the rear pointed toward them and the front end pointing forward, and I kept working the tires. Right across we went! Then I pulled them across, so we got across no problem!
Stay tuned for moose action!
