Yukon Clears, It's Moose Time!

Posted by: Jim Shockey

After my wash-out, snow-out, four-day sheep hunt that finally shut down our camera, we took a short break and began preparations for my own moose guiding season.

Right now I'm sitting on top of  one of the cabins here on the lake. We flew in today; it was  absolutely the most gorgeous , magnificent day of flying in the Yukon I've ever seen, all the way from Whitehorse to our camp. We flew in the turbine otter with my hunter Dick McCloud--he's the one who bought our donated hunt at the Safari Club Convention auction this past January. He has his ranch manager, John, with him. Fantastic snow-covered mountains all the way out here.

As we were coming in to this lake we saw a cow and a bull moose and two caribou, then we landed. Got into the cabin and got our gear unloaded from the airplane. We unloaded and saw two great big bulls there feeding at the end of the lake. Of course, we can't hunt for six hours (after flying), so we looked at them and that's all we could do. We got all organized, had a big lunch, chit-chatted. Now we're waiting for the six hours to be up to go get a closer look at them. One of them is up and moving at the end of the lake, we lost him, so it's hard to say what is the best angle to go at these guys. They both look like they're 58 to 62 (inches wide); one has more points and more shapely pans, the other is a touch wider and longer points.

More than 6 hours later ...

We made a little stalk over there, got up on the knob, looked down, and the two bulls were down below us and another bull off to the left of us and two cows as well. The two bulls ... I started calling and brought them right out, the one bull within 25 yards, but I just couldn't make the call that we should shoot them because I think we're going to find bigger. They were both under 60, but just a little under 60, maybe 55 and these were both kind of weak 55s, so we let them go. Lots of caribou around.

We had to break apart a beaver dam at camp. The water was all the way up to our cook shack. We caught grayling tonight for dinner. It's just beautiful out here right now, just stunning, gorgeous. Dad is already up here in the Yukon. Len is coming up in a few days, these two bulls will be perfect for those two gentlemen ...

Stay tuned for more moose action from the most beautiful place on the planet!
