Snow Blind Sheep Hunt
Woke up this morning raining most of the night, most of the morning until about three hours into the morning, so we broke camp, put it all on our backs and headed up the mountain. We made it all the way up to the alpine in sort of the foggy rain. Now we're up in sheep country with the tent set up again and it started raining, so we haven't been able to leave the tent since. So no hunting today again.
We've been sitting it's dark now having snoozes and reading a book and just waiting for the rain. The hike up was probably an hour and a half I'd say, a real serious hike up the hill, steep stuff. We saw three mountain caribou— two bulls and a cow, never seen humans, obviously, they just kept running back over to us 50 yards away, so that was pretty cool.
Heard that Brian (Wojo) on his misty camp has a great big bull moose spotted. a real monster. that they tried to get. They had it at 70 yards briefly, broadside, but the hunter didn't get the shot. They also saw 20 caribou, three grizzly bears and four or five other moose.
I haven't heard about Jim B. He's in there with our Mexican client, Jesus. The saw the big bull again yesterday, went after him two different ways, but couldn't get across the river ...
LATE NIGHT UPDATE from the satellite phone: Just giving you another quick blog. I just heard from Freddie that Brian did get that big moose, they say it's over 65 inches wide with all the riggin' so Brian told Freddie to get the belt buckle started with his name engraved (for the guide who guides to the biggest moose of the year). They also saw a huge 400-class caribou alongside the lake, passed it up because they were going after that big moose, and sure enough, there it was and they shot it. So they're going after the caribou tomorrow if it's still around.
Also the new cameraman in camp there is Tanner Adams. Hopefully they got good footage. Tanner's dad, Greg Adams, used to play in the NHL for Vancouver.
The Next Day ...
Been snowing all day long on us. We got out for about an hour; I finally just couldn't handle it anymore. We got into all our raingear and climbed up to the ridge to look over. It's just snowing too hard. We couldn't see anything, except that we know we're in the right spot ... if the weather just gives us any kind of break and lifts we can get up there and be right among the sheep, if they're there. Lots of snow. We got soaking wet just doing that little bit, so we're back in the sleeping bags just waiting for tomorrow.
Brian's moose that he guided out turned out to be a 68 1/2-inch monster!
Wish us luck with the weather!
