We're Wet on the Sheep Mountain

Posted by: Jim Shockey

I'm right now sitting just below the alpine on a mountain range. It took us about five or six hours to get all the way up to here, bushwhacking all the way, no trails. No one has ever hunted here, so it's a 100 percent experiment. It was raining and ugly all the way up. We got absolutely pounded, soaked. My boots are filled with water, soaked from head to toe. We got up to our spot here and found a little bit of water and a flat spot, so we set up our tent.

My cameraman for this hunt is Steve Pereira, tough guy; loaded him up with all of my food, and his pack weighs about twice as much as mine because he has all of the camera gear. But that's the way I like it so he can't walk me into the ground.

We're looking forward to this hunt, can't wait. One of our moose guides, Quint, yesterday had to get fixed up at the hospital. He fell and dislocated his shoulder while guiding a fellow from Mexico. So, Jim Bissenden is in there now guiding the client. They had seen a big bull moose that they thought would go Boone and Crockett, but the weather has been terrible.  f

We're really hoping this breaks. The sun is just starting to poke through, so I'm drying out slowly but surely. But I already melted one sock because I wasn't paying attention. So I'm down one sock ...

Our first two sheep hunters came out, but no one got one. We're going to make the hunts longer next year. We were doing 10-day hunts, but it just wasn't enough time with bad weather and whatnot. So, next year we're going to do 14-day hunts.

I really apologize to everyone who is waiting for me to answer their e-mails. I finished them before I came up here, so watch for them on the Web site sometime soon! Thanks and stay tuned.
