Hyena and Bushbuck, Fantastic Day!

Posted by: Jim Shockey

Fantastic day. Saw some giant crocs, a bunch of hippos, hundreds and hundreds of puku, more than hundreds of impala ... we also saw lots of waterbuck, four big bulls, but nothing big enough for us, lots of duikers, sables, just a great day all the way around.

Then this morning out of the big tall grass a huge, gigantic spotted hyena came running out. It's quite unusual to see them in the middle of the day. Sometime in the past his hyena had been snared on the front foot. It was healed over, but the foot was kind of gimped up, then he had been bitten on the back leg probably in fight with lion, so he couldn't hardly run on that. But he was taking off, and I had to do a running shot, 160 yards perfect base of the neck dropped him. Old, old hyena.

Skinned him out and went back out. Looked for a huge chobe bushbuck that we saw yesterday; real dark almost blackish one that was huge. I had it right at dark, but decided not to shoot because it was a little late to be sure of the shot. We went back this morning couldn't find him. Went back this evening and there he was! Made a 100-yard shot perfect, down he went. Great footage.

Todd Bissenden is doing fantastic. He nailed the shot on the bushbuck, real difficult videoing, but he got it perfectly. He's doing great considering that two weeks ago he should have been dead on that fall.

It's gorgeous here, hot during the day, bitter cold in the morning. We freeze on the back of the truck going out in the morning.

We've also been hunting for puku and warthogs and could have shot lots, but nothing quite like we wanted. We've been wanting to get perfect footage, so we're not taking shots unless we have it. Todd got the world record for eating hot peoppers last night, he ate seven of them. I did five the other night, and the whole next day I was feeling really rough. But he did seven and he was fine today. So tonight I am going for the new world's record.
