Rhino With Alpine Bow!
We got a rhino today! This morning, first thing, we were out there at first light because yesterday we couldn't get out there at first light to see where they went. They go from open areas at first light into brushy areas for the day. Yesterday we couldn't get out there because I had to shoot the bow and arrow.
We spotted a bull, cow and two calves at first light. The cow and two calves went one direction into a big brushy ravine, so we ran up and headed around to cut in front of them. As he was coming, we just tried to make sure we were going to be just off of the side of him down over the edge of the ravine where he coudn't see us. We looked up, and he came right over the ridge right toward us.
When we first saw him he was about 40 yards away; just his nose coming over the edge, then he got to about 30 yards and stopped, but behind brush. I was at full daw.
Then he kept coming around the brush, but straight at us and when he got to about, oh, 15 yards is about when Peter (the professional hunter) was saying, "Take him, take him, take him," and I've got basically his face and his front legs to shoot at, and I didn't want to hit the shoulder bone, so I had to wait until he got to about 10 yards, and then he turned just enough, and Peter was going crazy because he thought he might trample us.
But he turned just enough that I could get the meaty stuff just in behind the shoulder. Within minutes he was out. We got fantastic footage. It was he coolest hunt; perfect shot with the Alpine bow. The Alpine bow is magnificent. Really a fun, fun hunt. Got the pictures, and they gave him the antidote after about 10 minutes, he got up, and went off, fine. Old, old bull. The veterinarian was there and took blood samples and measurements and tests for that they do for rhino conservation projects.
Cool, cool hunt. I might just have to do more bowhunting now! That was exciting!
