Alpine Bow is Ready for Rhino!

Posted by: Jim Shockey

Went to the lodge last night. We went out in the morning early for rhinos and we saw five different rhinos, and they were running when we got within 1,000 yards of them just from the vehicle. We actually spotted them from the vehicle. Then we never saw any more rhinos the whole day, so we changed places.

We are at a different ranch this evening now. Real fancy beautiful. This is high, high-class, top-end stuff ... fabulous, fabulous place. Peter Tam is my PH, great, great professional hunter. We've had a lot of fun today, lots of smiles and laughs. He's the younger generation of PH's, probably in his late 20s, real professional; it's a pleasure to be with him.

We walked a lot today, looked and looked and looked and just couldn't find one.

Alpine Archery sent a bow here, so for the first time in about 20 years I'll be hunting with a bow and arrow. I was shooting it all this morning. They attached a dart to the end of the arrow, and I practiced with that. It is fabulous. The technology has changed so much since I used to bowhunt. The bow at 35 yards is just accurate as heck. We dropped the poundage down to 40 pounds which you have to do for the dart. The bow is fantastic. I am all excited now. I am shooting so great with this bow that now I want to go and hunt all kinds of animals with bow and arrow. OH-OH! We'll try tomorrow. We have to shoot the rhino in the front shoulder or back ham. So I'm going to try to shoot him in the front shoulder if I get that opportunity.

The other fellow in camp, Bud Bell, who was with us for elephants in Botswana, he got his rhino today on this ranch, and they saw lots. They had about seven different stalks; the rhinos are real spooky. We'll see what happens ...
