Background

Mexico Whitetail HuntsOf all the hunts in the world and of all the big game animals out there to hunt, I honestly can say that I’ve had the most fun, every time I hunt there, in Old Mexico. The food is great, the atmosphere makes it easy to relax and enjoy the hunt and the animals are there, usually plenty enough to keep everyone in camp happy, a nice thing for me as the outfitter! The big mature whitetails in our Old Mexico bow only area are just about always willing to cooperate!

These hunts are about as fun and successful as any hunt can be anywhere. There are tons of whitetails on our ranches and they’ve just about seen zero hunting pressure other than our bowhunting clients. I’ve never seen mature bucks so uncaring about human presence or activity. I’ve literally watched these big four and five year old bucks walk right under my stand, 15 yards away, with the wind blowing directly to them and they don’t care at all! It is normal to see between three and six bucks each morning and evening sitting, along with many does.

When the rut really kicks in, these deer are amazing to hunt. They don’t care about us and in a given situation, it’s possible to sneak right in to within archery range on four or five bucks at once if they are preoccupied with a hot doe.

This hunt is perfect for a father\son hunt, there is always something to do and always deer to see. It’s also the place that I feel has the highest odds for an archery hunter looking to take a Pope and Young (P&Y) class buck. In the previous few years, the success has been 90% with 98% opportunity. I don’t know of a better place to hunt whitetails with a bow and arrow.

This is a bowhunting only ranch and has been for many years. Operated formally by BOWMEX Outfitters, the exact same experienced Operations team will be on the ground handling the details of your hunt now that I am the outfitter. They were as good as they come before, up to our standards and they’ll do everything in their power to make your hunt a success and ensure that your entire experience will be remembered long after you're back home!

Remember we're talking about a 90% success rate on bowhunters harvesting totally FREE RANGE whitetails, NO HIGH FENCES! And these are not yearling bucks we’re talking about, they are mature whitetail bucks ranging in age from 3 1/2 TO 7 1/2 years old and scoring between 115 – 160 P&Y points! We ask our hunters to leave the young bucks with potential to walk and grow, but it is up to the hunter to select an animal they’ll be happy with. Whitetail hunting at the best of times in Saskatchewan is the best there is, but the success rates are streaky due to weather, winters, wolves, whitetail migrations and whitetail whim. It’s a pleasure to outfit in a place where all the clients smile all the time!

Mexico Whitetail HuntsLodging and Food

The lodging is a common bunkroom with a shared bathroom. This is not a 5 star lodge, but it is comfortable enough for most hunters and the hunting quality makes up for the lack of lodging comfort. We also have two cabins available nearby for female hunters or husband/wife, father/daughter hunting partners so the ladies aren’t stuck in a bunkroom with the guys.

Terrain and Hunting Style

One thing you’ll notice right off the bat, is just how big this part of the world is. The whitetail habitat extends for as far as you can see, hundreds of square miles of open range in which they are free to roam. Any hunting that goes on around our area is rifle hunting, which makes our ranch a sanctuary of sorts for the bucks. We’ll usually have one stand set-up for every 800 or so acres. Due to the fact that the only people on the ranch are the working cowboys, the deer are allowed to live and prosper in their natural habitat.

Another thing that makes this hunt in Old Mexico such an awesome place to hunt is that you never know what is going to walk out in front of you. On any given day you could see a huge whitetail buck, feral hog, javelina, coyote, bobcat or even a mountain lion. That is one of the many reasons we decided to outfit for these whitetails in Old Mexico.

Not only is it the place that I consider to be the best place for an archery hunter to see several quality bucks and have a true chance at harvesting the buck of their dreams, they can also spend the middle part of the day hunting hogs, javelina or calling coyotes and bobcats. This is fun! There are tons of big javelina and honestly, there isn’t much more fun hunting than hunting these 50-pound tuskers! One javelina is included with your hunt and extra javelinas are available for $250/each depending on availability.

We hunt out of stands with shoot-through netting or small tripod stands hidden in the brush next to game trails or senderos. Mexico is a very tough place, yet beautiful in its own way. The country is covered with cactus and brush, such as guajillo, mesquite, black brush, cat claw and the ever-present prickly pear. Our saying is, "Everything in Mexico has thorns or horns." This natural protein filled habitat is what produces those big dark horns we all love.

Clothing

This is a desert climate with temperatures in the low 30’s in the morning to the high 60’s during the day. Hunters should bring layered clothes that can be adjusted as the temperature varies through out the day. Once you send us your deposit, a complete list of recommended gear will be sent to you.

Travel

Our hunters fly into Laredo, TX and will be met by one of our guides at the airport. We request that all our hunters arrive before 2:00pm or fly in the night before and stay in a hotel so we can get everyone out to the ranch in plenty of time to check the sighting on their bow and get ready for the hunt the next morning. The drive is about 1 hour from the airport and because no one is carrying firearms, clearing the border is a breeze. On the return trip we request that hunters book their flights no earlier than noon in order to allow plenty of time to get back to the airport and check in. If you have to arrive or leave on different dates than scheduled, we can accommodate you for a fee of $175 per trip.

Everyone entering Mexico by vehicle or air, beginning Jan. 8, 2007, including US Citizens, will need a passport. All American hunters, planning to hunt in Mexico or elsewhere in the future, should apply for a passport right away if you don’t already possess one.

Bows and Broadheads

Any bow that can be used for whitetail hunting in any other part of the world can be used here as well (crossbows are also legal). Because some of our blinds have “shoot through” mesh windows, fixed blade broadheads are recommended (many types of mechanical expanding heads will prematurely open when passing through the mesh and effect flight accuracy and penetration). Most shots will be within 25 yards, but hunters who practice out to 40 yards will have an extra advantage if required.

Bow Importation

There are no special permits or licenses required to bring a bow into Mexico.

Dates

Hunts run for five days, starting in late November and running through December and into mid January. Our plan is to keep the number of hunters per week low to give the most access to the territory. We are limiting the hunters to 30-35 per year. Choice of dates is determined by the date your deposit is received.

Getting your trophies home

Your trophy buck will be caped, have the skull removed and the skin frozen. We can have your trophy taken care of locally by a taxidermist we recommend and shipped to you upon completion or you can bring an extra duffle bag and take the frozen cape and skull home with you. If you choose to take the skull and cape home with you, all risks and additional luggage costs are your responsibility (please make sure to check with your airline in advance regarding their rules and costs for the transport of capes and antlers).

Cost (all prices in USD)

$4,500 plus $500 (tag and license, processing and sundry fees) plus $300 (javelina, bobcat, feral boar and small game). Additional javelina available for $250 depending on availability. Total $5,300 all inclusive – no extra fees. If you shoot and wound a deer which is not recovered, you can hunt a second deer for $3,500. Observers are welcome for a fee of $1500.

Deposit

A $2,650 deposit is required to hold dates. The remaining 50% is due August 15th on the year of your hunt. All deposits are non-refundable for any reason. Requests for date changes once deposits have been paid will only be honored solely at our discretion and are subject to a 10% processing fee.

Refunds

All deposits and balances paid are completely non-refundable in whole or in part for any reason including but not limited to: illness, injury, flight delays, unforeseen loss of income, early departure, late arrival, business emergencies, family emergencies, etc. Please also be aware that any animal that is injured in any way is considered fatal and will be charged at full price.

Included

All lodging, food and beverages while hunting (no alcohol is provided in camp, but hunters can purchase their own and bring it with them), transportation from Laredo airport to camp, professional hunting guides, and field preparation of animals.

Not included

Commercial flights to Laredo, TX, hotel rooms before or after hunt, tips, trophy shipment or taxidermy. Although caping and skull boiling are included for your first buck, all additional animals are $50 for caping and $50 for skull boiling (payable directly to the ranch manager).
